Mental Shifts That Highly Successful People Make (Tips From Gustavo Oliveira)

First, what does it means to be successful? Second, what tips are there on how to be successful? Well, it can mean several different things for each individual. For this topic, let’s assume that a highly successful person is someone who has gained financial prosperity and/or has made their dreams come true.

I have been coaching people worldwide, including leaders, entrepreneurs and athletes using the DeRose Method. Throughout my years, I have realized that most people fail not because they lack hard skills — such as, technical skills — but because many do not have the Soft Skills needed to succeed. Some of the more critical skills (Soft Skills) and principles that are necessary to succeed, are not taught in many traditional institutions.

8 Things A Man Should Always Have With HimI was lucky enough to encounter the DeRose Method 14 years ago. Since then, the method has allowed me to train and learn how to develop the following mental shifts that highly successful people make.

They Transform A Negative Into A Positive And Turn Failures Into Opportunities

Let’s be honest, nobody likes to face difficult situations. We tend to run away from pain and chase pleasures, but what if we could shift our mind’s perspective to look at problems and bad situations as opportunities? Successful people know how to make better decisions by leveraging failures and turning them into new opportunities. Instead of letting failures get the best of you, start learning from them so that you do not repeat them.

They Collaborate With Peers And Teams Instead Of Seeing Them As Competition

When we believe in scarcity, we tend to compete against everyone as if there is not enough success to go around. Most highly successful people tend to create an ecosystem of prosperity around them. They believe that, when the tide goes up, all the boats go up, too. The ecosystem built helps one another; it’s a win-win situation. Successful people sum strengths and abilities instead of competing with each other. If you are a leader, you can create this atmosphere of cooperation, and, if you are a team member, you can naturally apply such ability to unify people for higher achievement.

The individual will always be weaker than the power of a group. So, start leveraging this power, not just in your favor, but in everybody’s favor.

They Have Discipline And Consistency

Achieving success often takes a lot of years. Therefore, discipline and consistency are key. Steve Jobs once said that he was convinced that 50 percent of what separates successful people from those that aren’t is pure perseverance. Although this concept may seem obvious, many people do not know how to develop discipline.

Our brain works through conditioning. Conditioning is a biological function that allows us to automatize tasks and behaviors. We learn how to drive a car through repetition until, one day, we automatize most of what is needed to drive properly; which then allows us to listen to music and talk to somebody while doing so. But, remember how difficult it was in the beginning when you hadn’t yet internalized it?

On the other hand, as we have good conditioning, we also have the bad ones. Ones that we learned unconsciously throughout our lives. So, if you want to have discipline, you need to first change such conditioned behavior, step-by-step. Once you acquire the new behavior, you need to maintain it consistently through practice and repetition.

They Never Fear Failure

Many leaders of the most innovative companies in the world claim that one must fail, fast and often, to rapidly learn the dos and don’ts faster. But, this mindset is not typical, since most people fear failure. I have been coaching entrepreneurs for many years, and many of them fail because they are so afraid of failure that they do not even try. It seems absurd, but it is more common than you think. So, right now, start failing as fast as you can — of course, not with the intention of failing, but with the purpose of testing (in safe and controlled environments), all of the variables that impact your business. Risk what you can afford to lose.

They Take Care Of Their Body And Mind

Have you ever experienced a hard day of work after sleeping poorly the night before? You feel exhausted, low energy, low enthusiasm and are mentally tired. Not cultivating good physical health and a clear mind is something that will hold you back. Many people say they don’t have time for this. But, this mental shift is a must, and a fundamental part of being successful. So, not prioritizing it means that your actions counter what you really want. It is crucial to set time aside to get your body and mind fit through physical activity (for the body) and meditation (for your mind).

Many people ask me how to start or when to start working on these mental shifts. My answer is this: The most important action is the first step, so take it, start from any of these points, but start now.

Be Yourself

The Ethical Code of the Month for February is Satya – truthfulness.
Satya is about truth but not necessarily always being brutally honest with people in a way that offends.
It relates to honesty with yourself and integrity in what you do.

Start by being honest with yourself – what are your strengths and weaknesses, what can you do less of, or more of? honestly.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is not think!

This is a short concentration exercise. Doing this every morning will enhance your focus, improve your memory and your brain’s ability to learn and absorb new information.

Sit up with your legs crossed, your back straight and head in an upright position. Place your hands relaxed on your laps or knees and take a few long and deep breaths through your nostrils. With your eyes closed create an image of a golden sun; keep visualizing this image for 5 minutes.

(… and you can do this online)

4 Exercises to Better Handle Anxiety, Fear, and Anger

How a person deals with other human beings is a big factor in whether or not he or she succeeds in business and life. It involves emotional intelligence (EI), or the ability to recognize and appropriately react to feelings in yourself and the people around you, particularly when it comes to handling stress and frustration. According to Gustavo Oliveira – a consultant who has helped about 2,000 people worldwide improve their EI using something called The DeRose Method – it’s a skill everyone can sharpen. Here are his words on four ways to build your emotional intelligence.

1. Study yourself.

To get a better understanding of your emotional responses, behaviors, and where your weaknesses may lie, learn to pay attention to your reactions and behaviors. And ask people close to you–only if they’ll be honest–to tell you what areas of your personality need work.

2. Manage emotions during stressful situations by breathing correctly.

Deep and steady breathing through the nose with a relaxed ribcage is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body, and strong medicine for anxiety, fear and anger. Deep breathing sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax. The brain then sends this message to your body, resulting in a lower heart rate and blood pressure. And when you are relaxed and calm you can better manage your immediate emotions.

3. Channel your emotions.

One powerful method of handling negative emotions is to transform negative energies into positive ones by redirecting them to fuel new opportunities. For example, in 2009 I was expanding two successful businesses. Two years later, both had failed and my money was gone. I was crushed, frustrated and disappointed, but instead of letting my emotions reinforce an unproductive mindset and behaviors, I took a five-hour drive and started thinking about ways I could channel the power of frustration into something positive. During this time, I realized that my failures actually taught me many valuable lessons on how to run a business and the things that must be avoided. I decided to teach these lessons to others and created a course which was a huge success and became an amazing new asset.

4. Transmute your emotions.

Try to transform negative feelings such as anger, hatred, pain, and jealousy into positive ones such as, love, admiration, compassion and kindness. For example, I had a student who was a professional stand-up paddle (SUP) athlete and would become emotionally unstable every time a competitor provoked him during competitions, which would negatively impact his performance. So, I created a behavioral training response for him: I asked him to smile at the competitor, row harder and intensify his focus. With time and training his response improved drastically and his new and unexpected behavior destabilized the competitors who provoked him.

Envy is another common negative emotion. Some of my students have admitted that the achievements of others make them feel as though if they are not good enough. I train them to transform the feeling and substitute it with admiration for the person’s success. They come to see it as an opportunity to learn from the person’s strengths, which is a more useful and productive response.

Asana – The Elements and Body Movement

The Asana Elements

Body Movement Training

In each class physical positions are executed in a choreographic format, with distinct passages between techniques. This concept was restored from the vestiges of Ancient Yôga during the codification of the DeRose Method. It not only adds a beauty and grace to every class but deepens your strength, flexibility, balance, agility and coordination.

Asana – The Body Intelligence

“Where there is consciousness there is life.” Shivananda

The Body Intelligence

At DeRose Method South Kensington physical positions are practised in accordance with the teachings of Ancient Yôga, taking the practitioner far beyond the initial benefits of health, strength, flexibility, balance and body-awareness towards the greater goals of expanded consciousness and self-knowledge.

In the DeRose Method we execute each position only once, aiming for maximum permanence, without repetition. Each position is executed with focused attention, and coordinated breathing, working simultaneously on both the physical and the more subtle dimensions of our being. Thus, mastery over the body is matched by corresponding mastery over the mind, and the emotions.

More than 2000 positions and variations

In DeRose Method there are more than 2000 positions, and variations, to master, the largest compilation ever recorded, creating infinite possibilities for your practice, and ensuring you will always have something new to learn and to propel you forwards on your evolutive journey.

Message to the Woman

“Life is beautiful when you have someone besides you, whom you can truly love, without reserve, giving yourself completely, body and soul. Someone we may offer our life to, our heart throbbing with emotion. Someone we may make pújá to with our tears of happiness and with those of grief. Someone to share the suffering, the solitude, the despair, but also the glories of a mission accomplished side by side, hand in hand…

Give it a thought: how beautiful to have the privilege to be chosen among thousands, among millions of people, to live moments of peace and love besides someone and, on and on throughout life, both dissolve in ecstasies of supreme joy, attainable only with the loved one! And, year after year of pleasure, happiness and personal accomplishment, have the contentment of growing old by the side of the right person! Without ever regretting what you never did – there is no worse regret than that…

… And then, together, marking Mankind and the Universe with the strength generated.”

Intuition Is The Highest Form Of Intelligence

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

— Albert Einstein

What about intuition? It has never been titled as a form of intelligence, but would you think that someone who has great intuition in things, has more intelligence?

In some respects, intuition could be thought of as a clear understanding of collective intelligence. For example, most web sites are today organized in an intuitive way, which means they are easy for most people to understand and navigate. This approach evolved after many years of chaos online, as a common wisdom emerged over what information was superfluous and what was essential (i.e. About Us = essential).

Intuition is like a muscle. If you stimulate it, it will gain more and more strength, maybe more flexibility. However, if you never use it, or if you misuse it, the tendency is for it to become poorly developed, deformed, enormous.

The fact is that almost all of us have intuitive flashes during the day, or even during the night, when we wake up with something in mind; yet instead of turning the light on and taking a note, we decide to turn to the other side and keep sleeping ‘for it is not the moment to worry about nonsense’.

The next time that you have an intuitive flash, take hold of it, for it may radically change your life for the better!
